Firstly, to my husband who just passed his Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion and is now qualified as a volunteer life saver. Do not mistake him for this guy...
The Hoff he is not - he calls himself "The Huff" as in "I huff and I puff and I collapse on the beach!" His words - not mine.
The second lot of congratulations go to Miss 12 who walked away with the book award for academic excellence for her class in yesterday's school award ceremony.
And as for me? It was confirmed yesterday that I had passed all my courses and am now a qualified education assistant (instead of just a pretend one!).
Hope the week is going just as well for you...

Journalling
I have started a new challenge with the kids for the summer holidays - journalling. Santa gave them each a new journal and pens at the Christmas party yesterday, and I have a whole heap of journal prompts that we can pull out and write about.
The first one was "What Do I Most Want To Do This Summer?" I wrote my entry and I was going to keep it private - then I thought "No - you deserve to see this too." So - deep breath - here goes...
What Do I Most Want To Do This Summer?
This summer I would like to rediscover my creativity. My creativity has been MIA since February - caused by a number of factors.
Depression is a big one, but I cannot solely blame it on that. When I am depressed I cannot face my sewing room, I cannot face my assignments, the housework goes undone, and, when the black dog is biting severely, I cannot face the world. If I am AWOL from my blog for more then a few weeks you would probably be right to suspect I have a black cloud looming over me.
Another factor would have to be a decided lack of organisation. I don't know where it has gone! It could be that life has gotten busier - between assignments, work, the occasional blitz on the housework, and the kids' (and hubby's) sporting activities, even planning dinner becomes a mission.
So back to the basics. I've done it before, I can do it again. I need a routine that I can stick to. I will return to meal planning - a week at a time - and the big shop to go with it. This will replace on the spot meal decisions and once a day shopping. A baking day is needed once or twice a week - muffins, breads, pizza bases, biscuits - and a good way to spend time with Blondie whose favourite activity is baking. There will be more emphasis on family cleaning rather than me feeling like a maid in a hotel. And there will be greater use of the diary for planning.
And I WILL schedule time in the sewing room. Scheduled time means that hopefully I will take that time - I will be able to ignore anything else for that time slot and just creaet. Maybe?
Assignments are now a thing of the past - unless I stupidly decide to take on more study. School finishes next week, Thursday for the kids, Friday for me. T-ball finishes this Saturday, gymnastics is done for the year. I can feel the shackles slowly releasing, one by one. We still need to practise the trombone, we still will have swimming lessons (but not till after Christmas) and we still will have surf lifesaving. But we do get a sleep-in back.
ZZZZZZZZ
I cannot guarantee this will all result in the return of creativity any time soon, although I hope it does. Hopefully Miss Lottie that means that you will get some challenge quilts back in the mail in the near future. And my nephew might finally get his snuggle quilt. Christmas presents will get posted once I can face the post office - if they don't get to you on time, I am thinking of you - I love you all lots.
So to all my loving family - thanks for being my anchor. You keep me grounded and pull me up from the depths. I couldn't do it without you.

I promise...
...to post a real post soon. When I feel more human.
I have just posted off my LAST assignment. Soon I will graduate. And hopefully life will return to some sort of normality. The dishes might get done. So might the laundry. Vacuuming? Maybe.
Blondie saw the plastic surgeons this morning at Princess Margaret Hospital and they have started to trim away the dead skin on the finger. It looks great underneath - last appointment next week.
We are off to BHP's kids Christmas party this afternoon, so I'll try and remember the camera. (And the Christmas presents for Santa's helper that didn't get remembered until yesterday - SSHH!!)

Update on Blondie
Just a quick update on Blondie's finger. I took her back to the doctor today as the swelling had gotten even worse. They agreed for the need to drain the finger - but didn't feel comfortable doing it. So they sent us to Princess Margaret Hospital - WA's children's hospital. They are absolutely brilliant there - it's Blondie's second visit in four months.
They softened the finger up with some anaesthetic cream for an hour, then they gave her laughing gas and cut the finger open to drain out all the blood. Then a compression bandage and a visit to the plastic surgeon next week to see about the nail.
She is such an excellent patient - she stoically sat there, no hysterics.
Get well soon Blondie.

Blondie does it again...!
Blondie is having a bad year. First the hockey stick - then the jelly fish sting - as well as her croup developing into asthma. So have a look at what she's done now. This photo was taken on Friday...
She did this on Thursday afternoon, at school with a heavy toilet door. I took her to the doctor on Friday and they drilled holes in the nail to relieve the pressure. It swelled more dramatically on Saturday, so it was x-rayed to make sure it wasn't broken - it wasn't. However, this is how it looks today...
And of course, it's her left hand and she is left-handed!! And as well she has been running a fever of nearly 40 degrees for three days which today has resolved itself into a head cold. So as today is my day off, she is spending the whole day at home doing NOTHING.
Miss Blondie says, "Roll on 2011!!"

All I want for Christmas...
...is my two front teeth!!
My handsome, gappy son. His eldest sister knocked the second one out on Saturday with the tee-ball helmet - yes, it was already wobbly.
And for your enjoyment some very fuzzy pictures (before the auto-focus was fixed on the camera) of some fruit people the kids made.
Miss 12's...
Blondie's...
And FJ's...
They did not last long after the photos were taken - RIP.

We love mulberries!!
This is our favourite tree of the moment - our mulberry tree...
It gets heavily pruned by up to half each year and it rewards us with it's bounty. So far we have enjoyed mulberry and pear scrolls...
And we love mulberry muffins but there's never any left to take photos of. We've made microwave mulberry and strawberry jam...
Which as you can see goes great on toast - excuse the finger in the photo! They also get them in smoothies and in their brain food containers for school. And of course, what is better than just grabbing a handful off the tree for a quick snack?

Saving water, saving our skin...
I have finally found a way to save more water AND make Miss 12 take a shorter shower! We already save our washing machine grey water to use on the garden, but now that our government has cut us down to one watering day a week, it wasn't quite enough.
So in to our shower came one 50 litre bin, and one 50 litre tub big enough to stand comfortably in. We have two shower heads, so the 50 litre bin goes under the one not in use and catches the drips (it's turned off but still drips). The person showering stands in the other tub and tries to finish their shower before it overflows. This was Miss 12's shower water this morning...
Four minute showers are gone - now we have four bucket showers instead! Now to the saving our skin bit. You already know that I make all our soap. The incidence of eczema and dermatitis has dropped dramatically because of this over the last year. So to take it one step further, this is now my shampoo...
I was sceptical, I did the research, and I'm now on day four and loving it. I wash the hair with 2 tbsp baking soda mixed with 2 cups warm water. Then I rinse it, then rinse it again with 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 cups warm water. You don't have to rinse again, but I do - then I condition just the ends of my hair.
My scalp no longer comes out of the shower bright red, my hair still feels clean and healthy, and the itchiness is decreasing. I've promised myself a two week trial so I'll let you know how it goes.
And now I'm making our laundry powder as well...
2 parts Lux Flakes (or grated laundry soap) : 1 part oxybleach (or borax) : 1 part washing soda. I use the oxybleach (Napisan or similar) instead of the borax because borax is not recommended for greywater recycling - builds up the boron content of the soil, bad for the plants. This batch was 16 cups worth - which used most of a box of Lux Flakes, half a 2kg container of a generic brand of oxybleach, and most of a 1kg bag of washing soda. I'll let you know how long it lasts.
PS My regular laundry powder is great for gardens and skin anyway - I'm trying this as a cost exercise.

Surf Life Saving season begins...
Sunday saw the start of the surf living season. On the beach by 8.45am, lined up behind the appropriate coloured flags (same colour as your caps, red for Blondie, dark blue for FJ), ready to start at 9.00 am.
There were long swims and runs, handled really well by both kids, then came the board paddling. FJ got the hang of it on the return leg...
And Blondie also got the idea about half way, after the instructor had to drag the board out past the beach break...
Then came the flag races, "Toes on the line, heads down....GO!"
"Who didn't get a flag this time?"
And considering that both kids had been with Daddy at Crusty Demons the night before until 11.00 pm, they did really well - we didn't get the expected meltdown, just this grumpy face...
"Can we go home now, please?!"

Swimming up a storm!
To all you suffering in the cold check out this photo...
Our pool is open for business, and last week saw air temperatures in the thirties and the pool sitting at 27 degrees. The kids even managed to get me to get in a couple of times.
This week has been cooler but the kids will be back in this weekend. They've gone back to school this week after two weeks of Vacation Swimming lessons. Very successful - Miss Soon To Be 12 passed Stage 9, Blondie passed Stage 6 and FJ made great progess on Stage 3. Kids loved it and we've enroled them to do two lots over the January holidays.
The last day of the holidays also saw the two youngest do their compulsary swim to get into the Litlle Nippers Surf Life Saving programme. Blondie had to do 50 metres - which we had no doubts about, and she did easily. FJ had to 25 metres - and he had not managed to do 10 metres to pass his Stage 3 swimming. Well - he did it. We are so proud.
Well done little man!!

The Nit Saga
Well, it is confirmed. Blondie did have nits, and a well established headful as she had not told me for a couple of weeks that her head was itchy. She had thoughtfully passed them on to her brother as well, and also to me - for the first time ever in my life. Luckily FJ and I only had a couple. Miss Soon To Be 12 was nit free as was her father - well he has no hair to have nits in!!
Now over the years I've tried every nit treatment out there - from the RobiComb, an electronic comb that zaps them, to the natural poisons, the chemicals and the conditioner treatment. Normally I've found the conditioner treatment to be the best. Not this time however.
After Round 1 of the conditioner treatment which removed heaps from Blondie, the next morning still saw her complaining of an itchy head. A quick look confirmed that she still had heaps. Right!! On to the poison.
And we also did a very unimpressed FJ.
Master FJ was so unimpressed that he requested a severe haircut - doesn't this look much happier?!
And Blondie has been after a major change too - doesn't she look cute with a bob?
Oh, and Miss Soon To Be 12 just told me to tell you all - "It's six days till my birthday!!!!" More on that another time.

Why do bad things always come in threes...?
I'm BACK!! Yay!! I do apologise for disappearing from the face of the earth, but our computer has been with our friendly repair guys for over two weeks - just got it back yesterday. Turns out it was full of viruses and spyware and broken files - obviously our virus software was doing it's job really well -NOT!!
Now however, my washing machine is throwing a blue fit - and yes, it was in the middle of a load of towels. And my camera is also in the repair shop with sand in the auto focus (how DOES that happen?).
So, deep breath, that should be it - right?
"Mummy, my head's really itchy!" Oh no - now we have NITS!!!!

Congratulations go to...
Miss 11. We got the news today that she has just been accepted into the Churchlands Senior High School musical specialist's program for 2012 - Yr 8. And in her choice of instrument - trombone, of course. She is so excited she hasn't stopped jumping up and down since. It is a scholarship program that lasts for five years, right through to Yr 12 and TEE exams. Well done, baby girl!!
This is a photo that her brother took when playing around with the camera. Needs to work on his composition a wee bit, but not too bad!

Busy kids
The boy left on his epic adventure yesterday morning bright and early. The kids didn't have time to get upset as they were also leaving for Miss 11's hockey game. He and his mates made it safely to Mt Magnet last night and to Wiluna tonight - although apparently part of today was done on the reserve tank as he ran out of fuel!
Meanwhile the kids have been keeping busy with a collection of boxes scrounged from around the house and the recycling bin...
This is the good ship "Cries Star", complete with car decks, helicopter and plane landing pads, and life boats. Oh, and an anchor chain made out of my quilting pins! Photps of the good ship "Paperclip" will follow as soon as it is finished.
And the weather was warm enough to have a mud bath...
Now I just have to clean the mud out the shower...SIGH! Gotta love 'em!

The countdown is on
It is now only two days until the boy and his beloved bike take off into the wide blue yonder for a month. Boy, will I be glad to see the back of him after the stress of the last few days! He is desperately trying to finish off a large project at work so he can leave with a clear conscience, and trying to finish the last bits on the bike, and coping with a broken nose (hockey injury) and needless to say is a wee bit stressed!!
Then I opened my diary this morning to find that Miss 11 had written me this:
If you look forward
into a world of your own...
You will find the happiness
that you have searched ever for.
It will stay in your heart forever,
and in your mind forever more.
Isn't it beautiful? And all out of her own head, so she tells me.
So now we are looking forward to saying goodbye to Daddy on Saturday and then hello to Grandpa a week later. Hubby organised for Grandpa to come and stay for two weeks while he is away which will be great company for me and a wonderful distraction for kids that are missing their Daddy.
Here's to looking forward...what are YOU looking forward to?

Interruption to transmission
Please excuse the brief interruption to transmission that has recently occurred. Our computer died - again. This happened six months ago as well, when the problem was supposedly fixed (under warranty). Over the phone they told me it was the motherboard, but when the technician came out, the graphics card was fried, and he replaced the RAM and the power supply.
This time the computer was not under warranty. Again over the phone they said it was the motherboard, and I could either extend the warranty ($600!) or buy a new motherboard ($400) and install it myself. "But you said it was the motherboard last time and it wasn't and I'm not buying a new motherboard until I know for sure!!!"
A local computer repair company took a look and for that same $600 diagnosed the problem, fixed the problem AND provided a year's warranty, all in three days. The problem being that the original computer company had put the wrong speed RAM in the computer which was underclocking the motherboard and frying the graphics card.
So the right speed RAM, a new HD graphics card and we are back in business.
Transmission resuming...

The things we do
My darling husband is going to the annual work team building "live-in/love-in", as we like to call it, over the next couple of days. Now he has known this was coming up for a few weeks. The first night they have a dress-up theme - last year was national dress - this year is medieval. He and his mate have decided to go as Shrek and Puss-in-Boots. And there the drama starts...
Musketeer costume? Not a problem - costume hire to the rescue - paid for by work. But at seven o'clock Sunday night he decides that the wig is not good enough and he needs a hood with cat ears, oh, and a tail please Lou. "I just thought I'd try stretching your creativity", says he!!!
Don't you love the cheesy grin?!!

Blondie turns 9!
Birthdays in our house are a day for cakes - the first lot being cupcakes for school. These are basic vanilla cupcakes but I did a beautiful buttercream icing with real melted chocolate. And rainbow sprinkles, of course! I love my new cupcake carrier - 24 cupcakes with no smeared icing.
And the best bit? The kids get to lick out the piping tube and spoons. What better thing to have for breakfast than chocolate icing?!

Then for dessert, following the birthday person's choice of dinner (in this case, meat pies) we have the birthday cake. Blondie chose a really easy one - a rectangular chocolate cake (I used our old family recipe - so beautifully moist) with her favourite photo, framed by all her favourite lollies. Talk about a sugar overload!

Guest post from Miss 11
Hi! I am Miss 11. You may have heard Mum talking about me on some of her posts. She also mentioned that I am a year 6 trombone player, an advanced year 6 trombone player as I am classified!
When I first decided to be a trombone player, nobody said how much muscle power would go into playing and carrying the thing, I mean look the case! Believe it or not the case actually weighs about two thirds of the weight.
When I first decided to be a trombone player, nobody said how much muscle power would go into playing and carrying the thing, I mean look the case! Believe it or not the case actually weighs about two thirds of the weight.
This is the instrument itself, the King, the Creator! Or just the trombone! Anyway, guess which is the heaviest bit. No it is not the bell, it is the mouthepiece! Yes really. I feel like I have been doing pushups after every practice.
See this? Good! This is the mouthpiece. It may look different to any other mothpieces you have seen before. That is because you don't just blow into it, you blow raspberries into it! This is how you make every single note. To go higher you tighten your lips (I don't go very high with a trombone because I play in the bass clef. Low notes!), to go low you release your lips, simple!
Plus there's this advantage. Look at my lips! I don't need to get botox injections because all those raspberries do it for me!
Miss 11 signing off.

The birthday boy and his cake...
FJ turned seven on Friday. For his birthday cake he requested a Jedi Temple from the movie below - the one where Jabba the Hut's son is being held after being kidnapped. Right.

Blondie cooks...
First things first - darling Auntie Lottie, we love the bread recipe!! I am now consigned to making all our bread, because the kids love it so much. The only thing I have found is that Perth flour must be much drier than New Zealand flour, because for the same quantity of flour I have to use nearly 4 1/2 cups of water! I also have been soaking cracked wheat and soy grits with the oats and it turns out beautifully.
Now, back to Blondie. Before the hockey incident she was cooking up a storm. She adores cooking, and is getting really good at following recipes. Below you can see what is left of her hedgehog slice. And it rivals what you can buy from the bakery...

And then she made cupcakes - they were delicious, vanilla and so light and fluffy. Made in the food processor, would you believe?!
Doesn't she look happy?
And this is the book she has been cooking from. We borrowed it from the library, but I am seriously thinking about buying a copy for us. It has some great basic recipes for kids - everything from meals to baking to dips such as hummus, and even pesto.
Photos of FJ's birthday to follow when I can find the cord to download the photos from my camera. Now where did I hide it this time?
